Plant Dyed Silk Scarves

PLANT DYED SILK SCARVES
I have started working with plant dyes and silk scarves to create something, which for me is alive with the promise of nature. In order to extract the colour, I use either the flowers, buds, leaves, stalks and roots (whole or powdered) of various plants to produce the gorgeous hues which range from light yellow, brown, green, purple and blue. I rarely get the colour I anticipate but the end result is almost always much nicer than I imagined. I use silk as it absorbs colour very evenly and is a very strong fabric in spite of its fragile and gentle aspect. I also love the fact that insects seem to enjoy the energy of the dyed silk as I almost always find insects walking along the scarves when I gather them up after hanging them out to dry.
COLOURS
As it is a natural product, it is very difficult to produce an exact, specific colour. The beauty of plant dyes lies in the gentle hues, which shimmer and shine. Colours can range from very soft yellow, to deep yellow to tan, brown, green, and also from pink, purple, copper and different shades of blue. I hope you enjoy this gift of nature as much as I do working with it.
